Google Hiring to Slow with Downturn

Google Inc. is slowing its hiring, a move likely to affect its growing Ann Arbor online sales and operations office.

The hiring slowdown could mean it will take Google more than five years to hire 1,000 employees at its downtown Ann Arbor office, a plan it announced in July 2006 with great fanfare.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company's decision to locate one of its major advertising offices in the state was seen as proof that Michigan's diversifying economy still has plenty of potential.

In June, Google employed about 262 workers at both its Ann Arbor office and a much smaller one in Birmingham. it was hoped by many that the Google Jobs coming to Ann Arbor would bouy up the Ann Arbor real estate market and make up for the loss of Pfizer.

Though Google operates the nation's dominant search engine, it makes nearly all of its money from advertising, an area expected to suffer during an economic recession.

Furman said hiring continues in targeted areas of the company, with 30 job offers being made last week alone.
