The Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market is celebrating its 90th birthday next week. Visit the fair on Saturday, August 8, and enjoy free gelato- with toppings provided by market merchants- birthday cake, and entertainment.
The market has been an Ann Arbor destination for almost a century, providing residents, students, and visitors with fresh vegetables, fruit, artisan bread, jams, chocolate, eggs, coffee, and a plethora of other seasonal, locally produced products. The variety of produce varies, following the growing season of the fruits and vegetables that are sold.
Many families can be seen walking to the farmer’s market on Saturdays from their Ann Arbor home to buy fresh produce for the week ahead. Chefs from area restaurants and catering companies peruse the merchandise to find fresh, locally-grown food to serve. The market is one of Ann Arbor’s treasures, and is one of many reasons why Ann Arbor real estate is so sought after.
Environmentally-friendly practices are encouraged at the market, which provides recycling containers for paper and plastic, as well as a compost bin for food waste. Shoppers are encouraged to bring recycled bags to use for their purchases Instead of using disposable coffee cups; the market’s website encourages coffee drinkers to bring a favorite mug from home to be filled up at a coffee shop.
The farmer’s market is open year round on Saturdays, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. May through December, and from 8 a.m. to 3 pm. January through April. If you’ve never visited, Saturday’s birthday celebration would be a great time to see what all the excitement is about. If you’re a long-time market shopper, you already know that the market is a great Ann Arbor landmark, so come out and celebrate!
